The first couple years here were tough. Finances were incredibly tight and I had to sell my beloved 1975 Honda CB 750 four motorcycle to cover expenses before I landed a job. I picked up a bar job shortly after and the following summer I bought an old Harley! I rode it everywhere that first season, but since then, itās been sitting patiently, awaiting a carb rebuild I havenāt quite found the time for yet.
The first winter hit quick and hard and this was before I had installed my wood stove (yes, itās actually an old coal stove but it was free, its adorable and it works great in the cabin!) That first winter was a cold, snowy struggle with nothing but a Propane Buddy Heater to keep me warm but I made it through to tell yaāll about it!
Iād arrive home from a bar shift to the freezing cold cabin with itās window frozen shut. That window had to be cracked to safely run that buddy heater. So Iād throw on the kettle and heat some water to lukewarm, douse a rag with the warmish water and wipe the jam of the window until it would release. Then I would fire up the little buddy and thaw the bones of this little building.
Looking back at those nights with the lukewarm rag and the frozen window, the struggle feels like a different lifetime.
Today, that ādirt cheapā property is the foundation of a life I donāt need a vacation from.
The rain barrels are full, Iāve got an awesome Water Filter (which you can see here ā¬ļø)
the sourdough is rising in a warm cabin, and that old coal stove that replaced the Buddy Heaterāis the heart of my home.
Iām no longer working four jobs to ālook goodā to a bank. Iām working one jobāthis oneāsharing these stories with 16,000 of you. It turns out the farmer was right about the lifestyle, but I had to break his rule on debt to finally buy my freedom. Iām glad I played the game.
I have yet to experience a winter as severe as my first one here in 2022 and for that I am grateful. It seems Nature is giving me some much needed time to prepare for the next BAD WINTER to come. And every day that goes by I find myself more prepared, little by little
In Issue #4: Weāll talk more about spring projects and whatās to come for this little cabin in the woods.
